Authorities have their hands full investigating a rash of accidents around Maryland. Officials say three people died in the string of crashes and eight others are recovering from a range of personal injuries as a result of the accidents.

Four of the accidents took place over the weekend. WBAL radio reports that the first occurred about 1 a.m. on Saturday. A 19-year-old man, who apparently had been walking along York Road in Towson, was struck and suffered serious injury that required transport to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. The driver of the vehicle suffered no reported injuries and could face charges.

Just 90 minutes later, Baltimore County police responded to an accident in Hunt Valley and found a 49-year-old Sparks woman dead in a one-car crash. She may have been speeding.

At about the same time, in Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County Police say two men were seriously hurt when the car they were in collided with a parked van.

Saturday afternoon brought more trouble. Maryland State Police say a tractor trailer and a car were involved in a collision near Crumpton in Queen Anne's County. They say the truck pushed the car into a farm field where it caught fire. Efforts to pull the driver from the burning wreck were unsuccessful and the person died. The truck driver suffered minor injuries.

Then yesterday, in Prince George's County, a five-car pileup along Oxon Hill Road killed one woman and injured four other people. Police say an SUV appears to have been speeding on the road and struck to cars as it traveled north near Fort Washington. After that first collision, they say it crossed into the southbound lanes and hit a car head on. That car then flipped and struck another. A woman in the flipped vehicle died.

The driver of the SUV survived and police are determining what charges to file.

Innocent victims of car accidents face an uphill struggle to recover their lives after such trauma. In cases of families who have lost someone to wrongful death, compensation may only contribute to the healing.
