There is a family likely in mourning today after a hit and run accident on Rockville Pike that resulted in the wrongful death of a motor scooter rider. Authorities have a suspect in custody, but no other information is available at the time we write this.
According to Montgomery County police, the yet unidentified male victim was waiting at a stop light on Rockville Pike somewhere in the vicinity of the Wintergreen Plaza Shopping Center. The time was about 1:26 this morning. They say when the light turned green, the scooter driver began to proceed north. That's when a Buick LeSabre allegedly driven by a 22-year-old man zipped up from behind and struck the scooter.
A police spokesman says the driver of the LeSabre continued heading north after the collision with the scooter still under the car. He says the man went about a mile before pulling a U-turn and heading south again on the pike. It's at that point that police stopped him and took him into custody. Meanwhile, the scooter driver was rushed to a local hospital where he later died.
The police say the driver of the car is being questioned. He will undergo testing for possible evidence that he had drugs or alcohol in his system. All that will come before any filing of possible charges.
The death of a loved one is always difficult to endure. When that death results from the negligence of another, and there's a chance that the responsible party may have been impaired by drugs or alcohol, it only makes matters worse. Families facing this kind of pain should not have to be weighed down further by the associated legal issues or concerns over just compensation for their loss. This is when a lawyer can help.
